With the fall semester in full swing, the coronavirus continues it’s unwelcome stay indiscriminate of the University of Mississippi. Ole Miss has implemented policies that allow for students to move forward with classes during the pandemic albeit mostly virtual classes. Even with these precuations in effect, there are still some things that remain uncertain. One of the main concerning scenarios for students living on campus is, what will happen if someone is infected with the coronavirus and the entire floor of a dorm (or more) has to be evacuated? Don’t think that could happen? According to many parents and students, it already has.
As of 9/13/2020 there have been 636 aggregate confirmed cases on the Oxford campus (3/16/20 through 9/13/20): reported by the University of Mississippi. Multiple sources have stated that full floors were recently evacuated in a dorm temporarily leaving many students without a place to stay.
Ironically, before the first known evacuation, I was discussing the current market with a client letting them know how condo sales have increased. In fact, there were more condos that sold in July 2020 in Oxford than there have been in any other July in the past decade (according to the North Central Mississippi Realtors MLS). This is very welcoming news after March and April of 2020 posted some rather lackluster numbers. As we were talking, my client mentioned they had been conversing with a friend discussing the fact that some parents were looking for a condo to be used as a “back-up” in case their child either contracted coronavirus or they were required to move from their current living situation.
To determine if this was just a fluke or something that other parents were having the same thoughts about, I decided to ask the agents of Cannon Cleary McGraw if they had come in contact with any clients that were looking to purchase a condo that might not otherwise be looking if it weren’t for this pandemic. The majority of our agents stated that they had clients that were looking for a condo due to the sudden evacuations. One agent stated there were some students that were having to commute, in one instance, 45 minutes, since they didn’t have a place in Oxford to stay during the temporary evacuation. Hopefully for the students’ sake, these evacuations are anomalous, but it seems feasible that this type of situation could continue to occur for the foreseeable future.
